Donation Forms Part of Buffett’s Pledge to Give Away Nearly All of His Wealth
Warren Buffett has made his largest annual donation to date, giving away US$5.3 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock to five charities. This donation, announced on June 28, consists of approximately 13 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B stock.
Buffett’s generous contribution includes around 9.9 million shares allocated to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Additionally, he is donating 993,000 shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after his late first wife. Each of the three foundations led by his children— the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation— will receive 695,122 shares.
At 93 years old, Buffett remains committed to his goal of giving away more than 99% of the wealth he amassed through Berkshire Hathaway, the company he has led since 1965. Despite having already donated over half of his shares, Buffett’s net worth is still an estimated US$134.3 billion, securing his position as the world’s eighth richest person.
