Aiming to Transform Asia’s Infrastructure Landscape
Temasek, the state investment firm, alongside HSBC Holdings, has officially launched Pentagreen Capital, a company dedicated to sustainable infrastructure debt financing. Announced in September 2021, this joint venture kicks off with an initial capital commitment of US$150 million, with ambitions to fund US$1 billion in loans over the next five years.
Pentagreen’s core mission is to drive the development of sustainable infrastructure across Asia by deploying blended finance solutions at scale. Operating independently from its founders, the company’s board will include representatives from both HSBC and Temasek, such as Stuart Lea, HSBC’s head of global banking for South Asia and global head of real assets finance, and Connie Chan, Temasek’s managing director for investment in financial services.
Pentagreen’s new board will be chaired by Kai Nargolwala, who also holds leadership positions at Singapore Pools and 65 Equity Partners. Marat Zapparov, the company’s CEO, brings nearly 20 years of experience, including leadership roles at the International Finance Corporation, Clifford Capital, HSBC, and KPMG.
Zapparov commented on Pentagreen’s role in bridging the gap between traditional financing and innovative debt solutions for sustainable infrastructure projects, highlighting the company’s potential to accelerate capital flow to Asia’s infrastructure development in line with the Paris Agreement goals.
