SGTech calls for public-private collaboration to boost SME sustainability and workforce development
SGTech, Singapore’s technology industry trade association, has outlined recommendations for Budget 2024 to better support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the areas of sustainability and skills-based hiring. One of the key proposals is the creation of a public-private sustainability communication office, designed to help non-listed SMEs understand the benefits of voluntary sustainability disclosures and align with government and corporate customer expectations.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability compliance and how it can contribute to improved business outcomes for SMEs. SGTech stressed the need for a top-down communication strategy to influence SME decisions, ensuring that these businesses can effectively contribute to Singapore’s 2030 climate goals.
In addition to promoting sustainability, SGTech also recommended the establishment of a national electronic directory. This platform would serve as a central hub for SMEs to access regulations, guidelines, and certifications related to sustainability, helping businesses navigate the complex landscape of environmental compliance.
On the manpower front, SGTech called for resources to be allocated to trade associations and chambers to help SMEs with skills-based recruitment and workforce development. This would include job redesign, redeployment, and alternative pathways to reskill and upskill employees, particularly in the tech sector.
Other suggestions include the establishment of a talent pipeline for tech professionals focused on digital trust, with a proposal for the government to appoint a chief trust officer in each agency to foster digital trust across sectors.
