Tourism boost and regional competitiveness justify investment, says Minister Edwin Tong
The economic benefits of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) grant supporting Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Singapore significantly outweigh the amount given, said Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong on March 4, 2024. The grant has driven increased tourist arrivals and boosted spending across entertainment, retail, and hospitality sectors.
In response to concerns raised in Parliament, Tong emphasized that without the grant, it would have been difficult to secure the concert for an extended run. Swift is performing six sold-out shows in Singapore, with over 300,000 tickets sold. Thailand’s Prime Minister previously claimed that Swift was offered between US$2 million and US$3 million per show to make Singapore her exclusive stop in Southeast Asia.
Despite regional criticism over exclusivity, Tong defended the deal, stating that competition for high-profile events is intense. Singapore must continue investing in infrastructure and event management to attract major entertainment acts. He also noted that revenues generated from large-scale concerts help fund socially impactful events, such as the National School Games finals.
Economists estimate that Swift’s six shows could contribute up to S$500 million in tourism receipts, reinforcing Singapore’s position as a cultural hub in Southeast Asia.
