Healthcare Heroes Combatting a National Challenge
Singapore’s healthcare professionals are on the frontline of the fight against diabetes—a chronic condition affecting millions worldwide. According to Diabetes Singapore, if unchecked, diabetes could impact nearly a million Singaporeans by 2050, with at least one in nine individuals aged 18 to 69 at risk.
As Singapore ramps up its HealthierSG initiative to tackle ageing-related health issues, three key professionals—a dietitian, a podiatrist, and a prosthetist/orthotist—play critical roles in managing and mitigating the effects of diabetes.
Dietitian Zakiah Halim
Zakiah Halim, 28, a dietitian at Changi General Hospital, has encountered diabetic patients as young as 17. She helps newly diagnosed patients understand how dietary changes can control their blood sugar levels, debunking common misconceptions such as avoiding fruits entirely. “Portion control and balanced meal planning are key,” Zakiah emphasised.
Podiatrist Arnold Hu
Arnold Hu, 29, a Senior Podiatrist at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, educates patients on foot care to prevent complications like diabetic foot ulcers. Alarmingly, Singapore sees an average of four diabetes-related amputations daily, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures.
Prosthetist/Orthotist Ng Li Bing
Ng Li Bing, 28, a Senior Prosthetist and Orthotist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, works closely with podiatrists to provide customised braces and prostheses for patients with diabetic complications. Her work spans designing artificial limbs for amputees to fitting orthotic braces for those with complex wounds.
These professionals note that diabetic cases are rising, and patients are getting younger. They also stress the multi-organ impact of poorly managed diabetes, which can harm the heart, kidneys, vision, and nervous system.
A Rewarding Career Path
All three pursued scholarships for healthcare studies in Australia, a stepping stone to their current roles. Their passion is fuelled by personal experiences and the ability to make meaningful contributions to patients’ lives. Zakiah’s inspiration stems from caring for her brother with a genetic condition, while Hu’s own experience as a podiatry patient motivated his career choice.
Changing Lives, One Patient at a Time
Each professional shared memorable stories of patient recovery and gratitude, underscoring the importance of their work. From preventing amputations to restoring mobility, their efforts empower patients to lead healthier, fulfilling lives.
As Singapore advances towards a healthier future, these healthcare warriors remain dedicated to combating diabetes and making a lasting impact on their community. “The smiles on our patients’ faces remind us why we do what we do,” shared Ng.
The battle against diabetes is far from over, but with professionals like Zakiah, Hu, and Ng leading the charge, there is hope for a healthier Singapore.
