SP Group Partners with Qingda Environment to Build 90MW Aquavoltaic Farm in China

New Project to Generate Green Electricity and Support Green Hydrogen Production

SP Group, the national grid operator, has partnered with Qingda Environment, a Chinese company specializing in environmental technology, to build a 90-Megawatt (MW) aquavoltaic farm in Jiaozhou, Shandong province. The project, valued at more than 400 million yuan (approximately S$76 million), aims to combine solar energy generation with aquaculture, optimally utilizing land for both purposes.

The aquavoltaic farm, set to cover 121.4 hectares (equivalent to 161 football fields), will feature solar photovoltaic panels across the aquafarm. The project is expected to produce 162 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually, helping to reduce carbon emissions by 160,000 tonnes.

In a strategic move, the solar farm will be integrated with a hydrogen production facility, supplying power to the first green hydrogen production plant in Shandong. The project is expected to be connected to the power grid by the end of 2024, marking a significant step in promoting sustainable energy solutions in the region.

This collaboration reflects SP Group’s commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives globally, with the aquavoltaic model presenting an innovative way to generate solar power while supporting aquaculture.
