Senior Minister Highlights the Role of Singaporeans in Strengthening Bilateral Relations with China
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized the importance of Singapore’s strong reputation in China during a reception with nearly 450 Singaporeans residing in Shanghai on Nov 28, 2024. SM Lee highlighted that Singapore’s brand name is highly valued in China, noting that it is well-respected and that the Chinese admire and wish to deepen ties with Singapore.
He stated: “Our Singapore brand name is worth a lot in China. People know about us, they admire us, and they would like to know us better and to do more with us.” This reputation, SM Lee added, holds significant value, especially during challenging times on the global stage.
SM Lee’s remarks reflect the longstanding relationship between the two nations, built on cultural, business, and personal connections. He acknowledged that Singapore’s own experiences have also contributed to the bilateral relationship, with Singaporeans in China playing a crucial role.
During his visit, which marked the 30th anniversary of the Suzhou Industrial Park, a joint project between Singapore and China, SM Lee met with President Xi Jinping and other top officials. In his discussions, he referred to Singaporeans in China as “our ambassadors,” reinforcing the idea that they serve as cultural bridges and valuable contributors to strengthening ties between the two countries.
