A Strategic Partnership to Bolster Southeast Asia’s Digital Growth
Singtel has joined forces with Indonesia’s Telkom and Medco Power to establish its first data centre in Indonesia. This marks Singtel’s entry into a third regional market under its strategy to meet the growing demand for digital infrastructure crucial to ASEAN’s economic development.
The new hyperscale data centre will be situated in the Kabil Industrial Estate on Batam’s eastern coast. Spanning an 8-hectare site, the campus will be developed in three phases, ultimately reaching a total capacity of 51 megawatts (MW), with an initial phase delivering approximately 20 MW.
Ownership will be led by Telkom, Indonesia’s largest telecom operator, while Singtel and Medco Power will hold minority stakes. The facility is designed to meet high standards of reliability, security, and sustainability. Energy will be sourced from Medco Power’s clean and renewable resources, ensuring eco-friendly operations. Connectivity will be optimised via Telkom and Singtel, catering to hyperscalers, multinationals, and local businesses in both Indonesia and Singapore.
“This venture with Telkom and Medco Power in Batam is our inaugural step into Indonesia’s data centre market,” stated Andrew Lim, Singtel’s Chief Commercial Officer for regional data centres. “Indonesia, as Southeast Asia’s largest digital economy, is integral to our growth plans. By combining our expertise with Telkom’s and Medco Power’s strengths, we’re forming a robust partnership to drive digital transformation.”
Singtel is also advancing projects in other markets. In Thailand, it is collaborating with Gulf Energy and AIS on a new data centre, while in Singapore, a new facility in Tuas is underway. Both developments are expected to be operational by 2025.
Shares of Singtel remained steady at S$2.56 following the announcement on Wednesday.
