Singapore’s Role as a Global Innovation Hub Key to Uniting a Divided World, Says DPM Heng

Deputy Prime Minister outlines new initiatives and emphasises Singapore’s future as a trusted centre for technological advancement.

In an era marked by growing global fragmentation, Singapore has the potential to act as a bridge-builder by becoming a highly trusted global hub for innovation, said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat on Thursday (27 February). Speaking during the national budget debate, Mr Heng highlighted Singapore’s ability to play a unifying role, particularly in the fields of technology and enterprise.

“As the world faces increasing divisions, coupled with rapid developments in science and technology, Singapore can serve as a neutral, reliable node for innovation that connects global and Asian interests,” he stated. “By collaborating with the best, we can build a brighter future for the next generations.”

Reflecting on his work in shaping the country’s early strategies, Mr Heng noted that as far back as 2015, when he was still Finance Minister, he foresaw the challenges ahead. “Even during SG50, we recognised the monumental changes coming our way. We committed to building a resilient Singapore, and while we never anticipated a global pandemic, we united and overcame it,” he said.

Looking forward to SG70, Mr Heng called for sustained investment in all Singaporeans, regardless of age, and the continued strengthening of the nation’s multi-racial and multi-religious fabric. Furthermore, he unveiled two new initiatives for the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) sector, set to roll out from 2026 to 2030, which will support these ambitions.
