Singapore Updates Covid-19 Reporting Amid Omicron Surge

MOH adjusts daily case reporting to include mild cases from GP clinics

Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) will no longer emphasise the number of Omicron variant cases within the daily Covid-19 statistics, as the variant now dominates the current wave of infections. Instead, daily updates will incorporate figures from GP clinics reporting mild or asymptomatic cases under Protocol 2.

Shift in Focus
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung announced on 21 January that the MOH is adapting its reporting practices due to Omicron’s characteristics. Studies show that Omicron infections typically result in lower viral loads, faster recovery, and milder symptoms. This has led to changes in vaccine policies and health protocols to reflect the evolving pandemic situation.

Inclusion of GP-Protocol 2 Cases
Previously, cases identified at GP clinics under Protocol 2—patients with mild or no symptoms advised to recover at home—were excluded from daily updates because they numbered only 100 to 200 per day. However, with the rise of Omicron, these cases have surged, reaching over 1,000 per day this week.

Minister Ong explained that including Protocol 2 cases in daily updates will provide a clearer picture of Singapore’s epidemic landscape. This adjustment means reported case numbers will now reflect both PCR-confirmed cases and GP-Protocol 2 cases.

Impact on Reporting Trends
The new reporting format will significantly increase the daily count of new cases. The change also involves backdating these figures to 6 January, ensuring historical consistency. This move highlights Singapore’s commitment to transparency while acknowledging the less severe nature of the Omicron variant.

As the pandemic evolves, Singapore continues to refine its public health strategies, balancing clear communication with practical adjustments to meet the realities of the Omicron wave.
