Singapore Reports Record COVID-19 Cases Alongside Tightened Restrictions

Five New Fatalities Amid Surge in Infections

SINGAPORE: On Tuesday (28 September), Singapore recorded its highest daily count of COVID-19 cases at 2,236, alongside five additional deaths, bringing the nation’s total fatalities to 85. The Ministry of Health (MOH) highlighted that most of the new infections, 2,226, were locally transmitted, comprising 1,711 community cases and 515 among dormitory residents. Another 10 cases were imported. Among the local cases, 483 individuals were seniors aged 60 and above.

The five deceased, all Singaporeans, included four men aged between 69 and 79 and a 77-year-old woman. Two were unvaccinated, one was partially vaccinated, and two were fully vaccinated, all with underlying medical conditions, MOH confirmed. September now holds the record for the highest number of monthly COVID-19 deaths, with 30 fatalities reported.

By Tuesday, Singapore had registered a total of 91,775 COVID-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic.

Hospital Admissions on the Rise
As of the latest update, 1,325 individuals were hospitalised due to COVID-19, most under observation for mild symptoms. Among these, 209 required oxygen supplementation, while 30 were critically ill in intensive care. Seniors over 60 accounted for 201 of the severe cases. Over the past 28 days, 98 per cent of local infections were either asymptomatic or mild, though 408 patients needed oxygen therapy, and 47 were admitted to ICUs.

Emergence of New Clusters
MOH is closely tracking 11 large active clusters, including a new outbreak at the Man Fatt Lam Elderly Joy Daycare Centre, where 11 cases have been identified, 10 of them clients and one a staff member. The centre has remained closed since 25 September.

The largest monitored cluster, Blue Stars Dormitory, added 20 more cases, raising its total to 401. Other significant clusters include Avery Lodge (256 cases), Woodlands Dormitory (216 cases), and Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre (106 cases).

Vaccination Progress
As of Monday, 82 per cent of Singapore’s population had completed their full vaccination schedule, while 85 per cent had received at least one dose. Over nine million doses have been administered nationwide. An additional 194,270 doses of WHO-approved vaccines have also been given, covering nearly 97,311 individuals.

Stricter Measures to Curb Spread
New restrictions, implemented on Monday, limit social gatherings and dining-in groups to two vaccinated individuals. Remote work has become the default for those able to work from home. These measures will be reviewed mid-October and remain in place until 24 October.

Primary school students (Years 1–5) have shifted to home-based learning until 7 October, while Year 6 students are on a study break until 29 September.
