PM Lee Outlines Strategy for Living with the Virus
Singapore is on track to ease tightened Covid-19 restrictions after June 13, as long as no major outbreaks or super-spreader events occur, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced in a national address.
Mr. Lee emphasized that Covid-19 will become endemic, meaning Singapore must stay connected to the world while implementing effective safeguards and border restrictions. He assured that with widespread vaccinations, rapid testing, and improved contact tracing, the country can resume economic activities and reopen safely.
Vaccination efforts will accelerate, with students next in line to receive their shots, followed by young adults aged 39 and below starting mid-June. The goal is for two-thirds of the population to receive at least one dose by early July.
As Singapore transitions into the “new normal”, Mr. Lee projected that activities such as religious services, entertainment, and sports events will gradually resume. Eventually, mask mandates may be lifted outdoors, and international travel will be restored for vaccinated individuals.
