Senior Minister Lee Highlights Tension in US-China Relations and the Need for Diplomatic Efforts
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed the importance of Singapore maintaining strong relations with China amidst growing global uncertainty. Following a six-day official visit to China, Lee pointed out the increasing anxiety surrounding the US-China divide, especially as the Trump administration prepares to enact new policies.
Lee emphasized that while US businesses are closely monitoring potential policy shifts towards China, China’s leaders aim to stabilize relations despite an ongoing economic downturn. Singapore, with its strategic ties to China, must work “extra hard” to preserve this valuable relationship, particularly as global tensions rise.
Lee’s frequent trips to China, including 14 visits during his tenure as Singapore’s prime minister, highlight the nation’s proactive approach to diplomacy. His remarks come at a time when President-elect Trump has announced significant tariffs on Chinese goods, potentially leading to a trade war that could disrupt supply chains and strain international relations.
