Singapore May Have to Reinforce COVID-19 Measures if Risks Grow Unchecked, Warns Lawrence Wong

Lawrence Wong Cautions of Potential Strain on Healthcare System Amid Omicron Surge

SINGAPORE: Lawrence Wong, co-chair of the multi-ministry task force, warned that Singapore might have to tighten its COVID-19 measures if transmission is worsened by “unnecessary” risks, leading to overwhelming pressure on the healthcare system. Speaking at a task force press conference on January 5, Wong emphasised that compliance with safe management measures (SMMs) would be crucial to navigating the anticipated increase in cases linked to the Omicron variant.

Wong stated, “As long as we remain disciplined and adhere to SMMs, we stand a much higher chance of managing this wave without needing further restrictions. However, should we lower our guard and take avoidable risks, the transmission could surge, leading to a larger wave of infections and more strain on our healthcare system.”

He pointed to the large gathering on New Year’s Eve at Riverside Point in Clarke Quay as an example of unacceptable behaviour. “I understand the desire to celebrate, but such gatherings are irresponsible during a pandemic,” Wong remarked. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify and hold accountable those responsible for breaching the rules.

Wong also noted that Singapore had used the relatively calm period in December to bolster its healthcare infrastructure and update protocols, distinguishing its approach from countries like the United States and many European nations, which eased restrictions before the Omicron wave.

He stressed that Singapore had maintained sensible and effective safety measures, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and limits on group sizes, which were essential for keeping the situation under control.

Looking ahead, Wong expressed hope that the country could manage the Omicron wave with its current posture, as long as healthcare resources like hospital beds and ICUs are not overwhelmed. He also acknowledged the need to be prepared for all potential scenarios.

Chinese New Year Measures
Regarding COVID-19 measures during the Chinese New Year, Wong confirmed that existing restrictions would remain in place, including limiting gatherings to five people. He also suggested that safe management measures for events like lion dances would be clarified, but the rules would largely stay unchanged.

Wong appealed to Singaporeans to continue exercising personal responsibility and adhering to safety guidelines to protect their loved ones during the festive period.
