A new S$165 million fund aims to boost major sports events in Singapore
The Kallang Alive precinct is set to welcome a state-of-the-art indoor arena, replacing the iconic Singapore Indoor Stadium, which has been a key venue for over three decades. The announcement was made by Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth Edwin Tong during the parliamentary debate on his ministry’s budget.
The new arena, described as “best-in-class globally,” will be built adjacent to the current Singapore Indoor Stadium site. To minimize disruptions, the 12,000-seater stadium will remain operational until the new venue is ready. While the planning is still in its early stages, the government has studied top arenas worldwide to ensure Singapore’s new facility remains competitive in hosting international events.
Since its opening in 1989, the Singapore Indoor Stadium has been a prime location for major sports tournaments and world-class concerts, hosting stars like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Jacky Cheung. The future arena aims to elevate Singapore’s position as a premier destination for large-scale events, with improved seating, hospitality options, and advanced facilities to accommodate a wide range of entertainment and sporting spectacles.
Additionally, Singapore is setting aside a S$165 million Major Sports Event Fund over four years to attract top-tier international events. Another S$20 million will be allocated to the One Team Singapore Fund (OTSF), which supports national athletes and emerging sports talents. These initiatives underscore Singapore’s commitment to fostering a dynamic and internationally competitive sports scene.
