Singapore Hotels Commit to Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

Industry Targets Sustainability with New Roadmap

Hotels in Singapore have pledged to track their carbon emissions starting in 2023, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This commitment is part of a sustainability roadmap introduced by the Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on Monday (Mar 21).

By 2025, the industry also aims for 60 per cent of hotel room inventory to obtain internationally recognised sustainability certifications, underscoring its dedication to greener practices.

Four Pillars of Sustainability
The roadmap identifies four key strategies to guide hotels toward these goals:

Innovative Hotel Concepts: Implementing sustainable features like farm-to-table dining, rooftop herb gardens, and eco-conscious bedding.
Encouraging Green Guest Habits: Installing water filtration taps to replace bottled water, offering housekeeping only upon request, and using sustainable toiletries.
Collaborating with Sustainability Providers: Partnering through Enterprise Singapore’s Sustainability Marketplace to adopt solutions in energy, water, waste, and plastic management.
Operational Efficiency: Focusing on water conservation, energy optimisation, recycling, and circular economy practices to reduce the environmental footprint.
Notable Innovations
Sustainability providers are enabling hotels to integrate green practices through products such as:

Vertical green walls and urban farms.
Smart, eco-friendly bathroom fixtures.
Recycling programmes that transform used bottles into new products.
Organic waste converters producing high-quality fertiliser.
Biodegradable, plant-based foodware.
Alignment with National Goals
The roadmap aligns with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, supporting the nation’s wider sustainability ambitions. STB and SHA envision this initiative positioning Singapore as a leader in regional environmental sustainability, using green initiatives to bolster competitiveness and drive industry growth.

Through these efforts, the hospitality sector not only supports Singapore’s climate goals but also caters to an eco-conscious market, paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.
