Singapore Delays Convening of Electoral Boundaries Review Committee for Upcoming Election

No Immediate Plans to Announce Formation of EBRC

The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC), responsible for determining electoral boundaries ahead of general elections, has not yet been convened, as announced by Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing on February 6, 2024, on behalf of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Timelines for EBRC’s Work
The EBRC was last convened in August 2019, in preparation for the July 2020 general election. Chan reassured that there would be enough time for political parties and candidates to prepare after the EBRC’s report is released.

While Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam inquired whether the Prime Minister would announce the formation of the EBRC, Chan emphasized that the committee’s work must be conducted professionally, without public pressure or media attention.

Committee’s Independence and Deliberations
Regarding Giam’s question on whether the EBRC would need to justify each boundary change, Chan explained that the committee, composed of experts on population shifts and housing developments, considers data independently when making its recommendations. It is not practical for the EBRC to provide detailed explanations for each change, as their focus is on fair representation and population changes.
