Singapore, China Launch New Sustainability Initiatives Under Tianjin Eco-City Bilateral Project

New initiatives aim to foster green growth and innovation across sectors in the Tianjin Eco-City

On Dec 7, 2023, Singapore and China unveiled 15 new sustainability initiatives as part of the Tianjin Eco-City bilateral project. The initiatives were launched under a new framework that aims to accelerate green growth and low-carbon solutions while strengthening collaboration between both countries in innovation, talent development, and governance.

The Tianjin Eco-City, launched in 2008, has served as a model for sustainable development, and the new initiatives reflect a shared commitment to creating a climate-friendly urban model. The eco-city will now focus on enhancing areas like ecological resilience and digital innovation.

A significant addition is the establishment of a green and digital shipping corridor between Singapore and Tianjin, the first of its kind between the two countries. This corridor will act as a testbed for alternative fuels, digital solutions, and technologies aimed at decarbonising the maritime industry.

Another key development is the creation of an industry alliance led by Keppel Corporation, designed to enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to pilot sustainability solutions in the eco-city. Four SMEs have already joined, focusing on eco-friendly innovations like nano disinfection coatings and digital marketing technologies.

The new initiatives reflect the growing importance of the Tianjin Eco-City as a model for sustainable urban development and as a platform for further collaboration between Singapore and China. The groundbreaking of the Green Innovation Park in the city’s center further cements this vision, marking a new chapter in Singapore and China’s long-standing partnership.
