Singapore and US Strengthen AI Ties with New Talent Initiative and Governance Cooperation

New AI Talent Bridge Programme to Promote Inclusivity and Collaboration Between the Two Countries

On June 5, 2024, Singapore and the United States launched the AI Talent Bridge initiative, a new program aimed at supporting youth, women, and future leaders in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative builds on a previous US-Singapore programme for women in tech that was established in 2022. US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo emphasized the commitment to providing access to necessary skills for everyone, particularly for underrepresented groups.

Raimondo, in Singapore for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity’s ministerial meeting, highlighted the significant investment from US companies in Singapore’s digital economy. These companies are expected to surpass S$50 billion in committed investments in AI and digital technologies in the coming years. Raimondo noted that such investments undergo rigorous assessments to ensure strong returns.

In addition to talent development, both nations will deepen collaboration on AI governance and safety. They aim to develop AI according to robust standards within a risk framework that ensures human rights, safety, and national security, while also fostering trust, which is key to broader adoption of AI technologies. The joint effort will include sharing best practices, advancing AI safety science, and creating international standards.
