Singapore and US Collaborating on Vaccinated Travel Lane Initiative

Target set for implementation by year-end

Singapore aims to establish a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) with the United States by the end of the year, Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong announced during a visit to Washington DC on Thursday (Oct 7).

Strengthening Global Connectivity
Speaking at the US Chamber of Commerce, Mr Gan emphasised the importance of maintaining Singapore’s position as a global hub for business and travel amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We have successfully piloted VTLs with Germany and Brunei, enabling the entry of fully vaccinated individuals for both business and leisure. We are now focused on setting up a VTL with the US as quickly as possible, certainly before the year concludes,” Mr Gan stated.

Singapore continues to facilitate the entry and return of US-based work pass holders, reinforcing its commitment to supporting global mobility.

Current VTL Model
The existing VTLs with Germany and Brunei, launched on September 8, allow fully vaccinated travellers to enter Singapore without mandatory quarantine. Instead, travellers undergo a series of Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and must have remained in approved regions—Germany, Brunei, or Singapore—for 14 consecutive days prior to departure.

This approach has been well-received, balancing public health considerations with the need for open borders.

Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
Mr Gan’s visit to the US includes meetings with Singaporean companies operating in the region. As part of his New York itinerary, he will participate in a closed-door roundtable organised by Enterprise Singapore, focusing on fostering stronger bilateral business ties.

Looking Ahead
The planned VTL with the US underscores Singapore’s commitment to reopening safely while supporting international travel and economic recovery. By expanding such initiatives, Singapore continues to position itself as a leader in adapting to the challenges of a pandemic-affected world.
