Prime Ministers of both nations discuss areas of cooperation and long-standing friendship.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore highlighted the strong foundation of relations between Singapore and Mongolia during an official lunch on Friday, July 8, in honour of Mongolian Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai. Lee emphasized the long-standing warmth between the two countries and their shared goals, including promoting international trade, regional peace, and maintaining a rules-based multilateral system.
This marks the first visit to Singapore by Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene since assuming office in January 2021. The two nations celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations two years ago.
Both leaders recognized the complementary strengths of their respective countries. Mongolia’s vast natural resources are balanced by Singapore’s connectivity, positioning it as a hub for Mongolian exports into the region and beyond. Lee recalled the support both countries have extended during times of need, citing Singapore’s donation of COVID-19 test kits to Mongolia in 2020, and Mongolia’s gesture of providing gift bags to Singapore’s healthcare workers as a show of gratitude.
Human resource development is another key area of cooperation, with more than 1,600 Mongolian officials having participated in Singapore’s Cooperation Programme, which focuses on finance, economic development, public administration, and communication skills. Both leaders expressed a desire to continue enhancing this collaboration in the future.
In a statement, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed discussions on expanding bilateral cooperation in areas such as capacity building and urban development. The signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) and Mongolian ministries was also welcomed, specifically agreements focusing on sustainable pension systems and public housing.
The two leaders also reiterated their commitment to upholding a multilateral rules-based system and exchanged views on regional and global developments.
In a special tribute, a new orchid hybrid was named in honour of Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene—the Papilionanda Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai—as a symbol of the enduring friendship between Singapore and Mongolia.
Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene is scheduled to depart Singapore on Saturday, July 9.
