Singapore Adopts Gradual Approach to Easing COVID-19 Restrictions

Step-by-Step Strategy Aims to Balance Public Safety and Stability

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasised a cautious and phased easing of COVID-19 restrictions to prevent abrupt policy reversals. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum on Nov 17, PM Lee highlighted the necessity of stabilising the situation at each stage of reopening, ensuring minimal disruption for residents.

A Gradual Transition
PM Lee acknowledged the complexity of transitioning to living with COVID-19 as the virus evolves. By adopting a measured approach, Singapore aims to manage public expectations and avoid re-tightening measures, which could lead to public frustration. The recent Forum event, attended by over 300 delegates, reflects a broader easing in safety protocols.

Vaccination and Vulnerable Populations
Responding to questions about unvaccinated seniors, PM Lee stressed the human cost involved in neglecting vulnerable groups. He emphasised that policies must consider the impact on the wider population connected to these individuals.

Geopolitical and Climate Challenges
Beyond domestic concerns, PM Lee addressed global issues, including US-China relations and climate change cooperation. He underlined the necessity of dialogue to mitigate tensions and build consensus on critical challenges like cross-strait relations and environmental policies.

Carbon and Wealth Taxation
On the subject of carbon taxes, PM Lee described Singapore’s current S$5 per tonne rate as symbolic, with plans to increase it significantly to meet 2050 climate targets. Regarding wealth taxes, he pointed out the complexities of implementation, citing modern assets like cryptocurrency as potential challenges.

Reflecting on the future, PM Lee expressed hope for peace amid global tensions and revealed aspirations for a less demanding role in ten years’ time.
