Shell Suspends Pulau Bukom Unit After Suspected Oil Leak

Containment measures in place as authorities closely monitor the situation.

SINGAPORE – Energy giant Shell has temporarily shut down one of its oil-processing units at Pulau Bukom, following a suspected oil leak that led to a discharge of oil mixed with cooling water.

The affected unit, responsible for producing refined products such as diesel, was reported to have leaked a small amount of oil. Shell estimates the discharge at a few tonnes, though cleanup operations are underway to prevent environmental damage.

Swift Containment Efforts
Containment measures have been activated to mitigate the spill’s impact:

Absorbent booms, dispersants, and oil-skimmer systems are in operation.
MPA and Shell boats are actively cleaning up light oil sheens observed off Pulau Bukom.
Satellites and drones are being used for real-time surveillance of the affected areas.
Precautionary steps include deploying oil absorbent booms at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park and Sentosa beaches. Authorities have confirmed that no major oil patches are currently visible near Pulau Bukom.

Operational Impact
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and other government agencies, including the National Environment Agency, are monitoring the situation. Despite the spill, navigational traffic and bunkering operations at the Port of Singapore remain unaffected.

Recurring Incidents Raise Concerns
This incident marks the third oil spill in Singapore’s waters within six months, with a previous Shell-related incident occurring in October. On Oct 20, between 30 and 40 tonnes of oil and water leaked from a pipeline near Pulau Bukom, while a June collision at Pasir Panjang Terminal resulted in a discharge of 400 tonnes of oil.

Environmental experts have expressed concerns over the frequency of such incidents, urging companies to enhance monitoring and maintenance processes to prevent leaks.

Looking Ahead
The affected unit at Pulau Bukom will remain offline as Shell conducts a thorough investigation. In its statement, Shell emphasized its commitment to minimizing environmental harm and working closely with authorities to resolve the issue.

Authorities will continue their surveillance and cleanup efforts to ensure the marine environment around Pulau Bukom remains protected.
