Candidates for Singapore’s next presidential election formally confirmed after filing nominations
The presidential race in Singapore officially commenced on August 22, 2023, marking the beginning of the first contested election in over a decade. Three prominent candidates—Ng Kok Song, former senior minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and ex-NTUC Income CEO Tan Kin Lian—were confirmed on Tuesday morning after submitting their nominations at the People’s Association headquarters.
The candidates delivered speeches post-confirmation, each outlining their goals for the presidency. Ng Kok Song emphasized his commitment to safeguarding national treasures such as reserves, public administration, and social stability. He highlighted his independence from political parties, positioning himself as a unifying force for Singapore’s uncertain future.
Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who has extensive experience both locally and internationally, pledged to contribute his skills to serve Singapore with dedication. He spoke of a challenging future for Singapore and called for an honorable campaign that seeks to unite the nation. His campaign slogan is “Respect for all.”
Tan Kin Lian focused on providing Singaporeans with an independent choice for president, vowing to faithfully fulfill his constitutional duties if elected. He also mentioned his vision of a future where Singaporeans are empowered with life skills, such as financial literacy and emotional resilience. His slogan is “United for our future.”
As the campaign unfolds, the three candidates continue their public engagements, with each seeking to inspire confidence and appeal to voters’ diverse needs and aspirations. Their symbols—an open hand, a pineapple, and four figures holding a flower—represent unity, hope, and inclusivity for the future of Singapore.
