President Tharman vows to strengthen national unity

A commitment to inclusivity in a challenging era

Singapore’s newly inaugurated ninth president, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, has pledged to enhance national unity and social cohesion. During his swearing-in ceremony at the Istana on September 14, 2023, he emphasized the importance of strengthening multiracialism and fostering a more inclusive society.

Having campaigned under the slogan “Respect for all,” President Tharman expressed his dedication to promoting deeper respect among citizens from all walks of life. He highlighted that Singapore’s cohesive society and high level of trust must not be taken for granted, especially in an increasingly uncertain world.

His plans include encouraging interactions between different communities through sports, arts, and collaborative self-help programs. Additionally, he aims to support disadvantaged youth, individuals facing mental health struggles, caregivers, and the elderly. Recognizing the potential for further development, he also committed to advancing Singapore’s arts and sports sectors.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized that Singapore’s highest office should be held by someone with the right experience, values, and leadership qualities. He noted that President Tharman’s strong electoral victory reflects the public’s confidence in his ability to unite the nation.

Addressing economic concerns, President Tharman reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding Singapore’s reserves with a balanced and independent approach. He acknowledged that future crises, including climate change, may require careful decision-making regarding their use.

On the international front, he pledged to uphold Singapore’s values while navigating global uncertainties. He stressed the importance of advancing the nation’s long-term interests without aligning with any particular global power.

Prime Minister Lee assured full governmental support for President Tharman’s initiatives, particularly in protecting the nation’s financial stability. He also expressed gratitude to former President Halimah Yacob for her contributions to national unity and diplomatic relations.
