President Tharman commits to inclusivity and responsible stewardship of reserves

Newly elected leader vows to strengthen unity and safeguard Singapore’s future

Newly sworn-in President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has pledged to foster a more inclusive and united Singapore while exercising caution in managing the nation’s financial reserves. Speaking at his inauguration ceremony on September 14, 2023, he emphasized the importance of maintaining social cohesion in an increasingly unpredictable global environment.

President Tharman, who won a decisive victory with 70.4% of the vote, reiterated his campaign message of “Respect for All,” committing to initiatives that promote multiracial harmony and societal inclusivity. He stressed that while Singapore has built a cohesive and trusting society, this unity cannot be taken for granted.

“Diversity will continue to grow, but we must ensure that our differences do not divide us,” he said, calling on citizens to strengthen their sense of togetherness. To achieve this, he plans to encourage cross-cultural interactions, including sports, arts, and collaborations between self-help groups.

Beyond unity, President Tharman highlighted the need for greater support for disadvantaged youth, individuals facing mental health challenges, caregivers, and seniors. He aims to cultivate an active civil society where community stakeholders play a crucial role in social development.

He also underscored the importance of arts and sports in national identity, stating that by nurturing talent in these areas, Singapore can continue to inspire future generations.

On the financial front, President Tharman vowed to be “scrupulous and independent” in overseeing the nation’s reserves, ensuring their prudent use during crises while preserving them for future generations. Acknowledging long-term challenges such as climate change, he stressed that any decision to tap into the reserves would be weighed carefully.

In foreign affairs, he affirmed his commitment to strengthening Singapore’s global standing, ensuring the nation remains principled and independent amid international tensions. “We must always advance our long-term national interests by standing up firmly for our principles rather than choosing one side or the other,” he said.

As he embarks on his presidency, Tharman expressed gratitude for the support of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former President Halimah Yacob, pledging to serve Singapore with dedication and integrity.
