Prime Minister Explains That Election Will Be Called When the Time is Right
Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, addressed speculation regarding the upcoming general election, which is due by November 2025, but could potentially take place earlier. On June 12, during a media interview on his introductory visits to Brunei and Malaysia, PM Wong reassured the public that the general election would be called at an appropriate time.
When asked if people should anticipate the election taking place this year, Wong acknowledged the speculation but emphasized that there is still much work to be done both domestically and externally to move Singapore forward. He clarified that, while the electoral boundaries review committee has not yet been convened, there will be clear communication once the process moves forward.
Referring to his packed international schedule, PM Wong noted upcoming key global summits, including the Asean Summit in Laos (October 6-11), the APEC Summit in Peru (November 13-15), and the G20 Summit in Brazil (November 18-19). He highlighted that these dates are publicly known and could help the public “mark out” when he will be away, implying that his schedule would factor into the timing of the election.
Wong’s remarks suggest that the decision on the election will depend on the right moment for Singapore’s priorities, both internal and external, and that the public will be informed well in advance when it is time.
