Transition of leadership and cabinet updates expected under new prime minister
As Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong prepares to step down on May 15, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that Lee will remain in the Cabinet as a senior minister. Wong confirmed that this transition will involve a new Cabinet lineup, though there will be no major changes, maintaining Singapore’s focus on continuity and progressive change.
The reshuffle, which will be unveiled in a press conference a few days before Wong’s swearing-in, will largely keep existing ministers in their current portfolios. However, Wong emphasized the importance of bringing in new members and possibly promoting existing ones to ensure a balanced team of experienced ministers and fresh faces.
Wong also outlined his priorities, including recruiting new members to strengthen the team, addressing current challenges, and ensuring the government adapts to the evolving needs of the country. This approach aims to provide continuity while also refreshing strategies to address issues like the economy, jobs, and the cost of living.
