NUS Invests S$20 Million to Turn Deep-Tech Research into Market Solutions

NUS launches new funding initiatives to support commercialization of deep-tech innovations

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is committing S$20 million to transform deep-tech research into market-ready solutions. The funding includes S$10 million for the NUS Graduate Research Innovation Programme (Grip) and another S$10 million for new initiatives: the Innovation Fellowship and Venture Creation Awards.

The Innovation Fellowship offers a two-year grant of S$80,000 annually for early-career postdoctoral fellows, while the Venture Creation Awards include three categories aimed at full-time faculty, with annual awards of S$150,000 for experienced researchers and S$250,000 for tenured faculty with proven success in translating research into market solutions.

Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of “scientist-entrepreneurs” to drive deep-tech commercialization, aligning with Singapore’s broader S$28 billion Research, Innovation, and Enterprise 2025 plan.

With this funding, NUS aims to boost its Grip 2.0 program, which has strategic partnerships with top global venture capital firms to provide mentorship, funding, and resources for start-ups in the deep-tech space.
