Novavax Non-mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine Arrives in Singapore, Expected to Be Available by End-May

Nuvaxovid to be Offered at Vaccination Centres and Clinics as Part of National Programme

SINGAPORE: The first shipment of Novavax’s Nuvaxovid Covid-19 vaccine has arrived in Singapore, as announced by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on May 4. This will allow the Ministry to start offering the non-mRNA vaccine at its first Joint Testing and Vaccination Centre (JTVC), located at the former Bishan Park Secondary School, as well as at 20 Public Health Preparedness Clinics (PHPCs) by the end of May.

MOH is also in the process of onboarding additional selected PHPCs to offer the Nuvaxovid vaccine, with further details expected to be shared in the coming weeks.

As part of Singapore’s National Vaccination Programme, Nuvaxovid will be available for individuals aged 18 and above, for both primary series vaccinations and booster doses. This inclusion follows the recommendation of the Expert Committee on Covid-19 Vaccination (EC19V) earlier this year.

While Nuvaxovid is considered an acceptable alternative to mRNA vaccines, MOH noted that mRNA vaccines are still preferred due to their higher efficacy and stronger immune response. The Ministry emphasized the importance of continuing booster vaccinations to protect against Covid-19.

Additionally, MOH introduced JTVCs as a new type of facility that will provide both Covid-19 testing and vaccination services in the same location. This aims to streamline resources while ensuring accessibility to the public. JTVCs are expected to be operational by the end of May 2022.

MOH urged all eligible individuals to get vaccinated and take booster doses as part of the ongoing strategy to combat Covid-19.
