New Tengah Residents Struggle with Public Transport Accessibility

Limited bus options and long walks to stops frustrate early homeowners.

Residents of Tengah’s newly developed Plantation Acres and Plantation Grange precincts are facing significant challenges due to a lack of public transport options. Many, like administrative assistant Chan Si Hui, have delayed moving into their new flats, citing long walking distances to the nearest bus stops as a major concern.

Although Chan received the keys to her new home in August, she continues renting elsewhere with her elderly parents, choosing to move only after a nearby bus stop along Tengah Boulevard is operational in December. Currently, residents must navigate construction sites and walk up to 15 minutes to access the nearest public bus service.

A survey conducted among 59 residents highlighted dissatisfaction with the limited routes available. Many called for a direct connection to Jurong East, a key transport hub. The findings were submitted to authorities, including the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Housing Development Board (HDB).

MP Amy Khor, who is also Senior Minister of State for Transport, acknowledged the inconvenience but explained that staggered key collections have led to temporary gaps in transport accessibility. LTA has announced plans to improve connectivity as more residents move in, with further details to be shared in the coming months.

In the meantime, authorities are working to ensure safer walking paths, prevent construction disruptions, and introduce temporary amenities like vending machines for hot meals and a mobile grocery service. Bus service 993 is also available for residents commuting to Jurong East.

Despite reassurances, many residents remain frustrated by the limited transport options, with some facing lengthy commutes or multiple transfers for daily routines. As Tengah continues to develop, authorities aim to gradually expand its infrastructure and transport network.
