Malaysians Prepare to Vote in General Election While Residing in Singapore

Support from Employers Helps Facilitate Return Trips

Malaysians, who form Singapore’s largest migrant population with approximately a million residents as of 2020, are gearing up to return home for Malaysia’s 15th general election (GE15), scheduled for November 19.

PREPARING FOR THE POLLS
Many Malaysians living and working in Singapore are finalising travel arrangements to cast their votes. Some are booking coaches and flights early to avoid sold-out tickets and traffic congestion, while others consider alternatives like carpooling or crossing into Johor Bahru for domestic transport.

Valerie Ng, a finance professional, plans to travel to Malacca by coach. “I’m fortunate that Malacca is relatively close. Voting is not just a duty; it’s also a chance to reunite with my family,” she said. After securing her ticket immediately following the election announcement, she noted how quickly they sold out, leaving friends to seek other options.

With increased demand, flight prices have surged. Singapore Airlines shows a 10% rise in ticket costs to Kuala Lumpur for polling weekend, compared to typical year-end holiday rates.

EMPLOYERS OFFERING FLEXIBILITY
Singapore-based businesses are stepping up to assist Malaysian employees in exercising their voting rights. Many companies, including those under the Singapore Logistics Association, are granting time off and adjusting work schedules.

“Firms are showing flexibility by offering leave or modified work hours while maintaining operations through workforce adjustments,” said Eddie Lim, the association’s executive director.

As Malaysians prepare for this crucial event, the support of their employers and communities underscores the importance of participation in shaping their nation’s future.
