Singapore Studio to Drive Innovation in Immersive Storytelling
Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB, the immersive entertainment division of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), has announced the opening of its first international studio in Singapore. This expansion marks a significant step for the Emmy-nominated and Oscar-winning studio, known for its cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) and real-time storytelling projects.
Located at Fusionopolis, Supported by Singapore’s EDB
The new studio, based within ILM’s existing Singapore office at Fusionopolis, builds on the facility’s longstanding presence in the region since 2006. The expansion has been made possible with support from Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB).
Philbert Gomez, vice-president and head of digital industry at EDB, highlighted the studio’s potential to upskill Singaporeans in areas like 3D modelling, artificial intelligence, and real-time rendering. “This move creates exciting opportunities for Singaporeans to work on innovative immersive media projects,” said Gomez.
Expanding Immersive Capabilities and Storytelling Legacy
ILMxLAB Singapore aims to extend the studio’s expertise in immersive content, drawing from its acclaimed works, including Vader Immortal, CARNE y ARENA, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, and Avengers: Damage Control.
Luke Hetherington, executive in charge of ILM’s Singapore and Sydney studios, expressed excitement about the venture, stating, “Over the past two decades, our Singapore studio has excelled in visual effects. With ILMxLAB, we are now poised to venture into immersive experiences, fostering regional partnerships and developing groundbreaking content.”
Vicki Dobbs Beck, vice-president of immersive content innovation at ILMxLAB, described the Singapore expansion as “another thrilling chapter” in the studio’s journey. She added, “We look forward to leveraging Singapore’s talent to support the innovative and award-winning storytelling ILMxLAB is known for.”
A Legacy of Innovation and Artistic Excellence
Since its founding in 2015, ILMxLAB has been at the forefront of immersive storytelling, producing experiences that blur the lines between cinema and virtual reality. With this new studio, Lucasfilm underscores its commitment to pushing the boundaries of immersive entertainment while nurturing talent and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.
