Big cats were in transit and are not owned by local wildlife parks
Two lions escaped their cargo containers while transiting through Changi Airport on Dec. 12, prompting safety measures and professional intervention. The lions do not belong to any of Singapore’s wildlife parks, including the Singapore Zoo or other Mandai Wildlife Group facilities.
Lions in Transit, Not Local Residents
The Mandai Wildlife Group confirmed that the lions were passing through Singapore en route to an overseas facility and are not part of their collection. Singapore Airlines (SIA) clarified that the animals were on transhipment and emphasised collaboration with Mandai Wildlife Group to ensure their well-being.
Temporary Containment and Monitoring
After escaping, the lions were secured within safety netting around their containers and sedated for safe handling. They have since been transported to Mandai’s quarantine facility for observation, where veterinary teams are closely monitoring their recovery from the tranquillisation.
Ensuring Safe Transport
Mandai Wildlife Group is working with SIA to ensure the lions are fit to continue their journey. Measures are being taken to guarantee their welfare during transit. SIA has refrained from disclosing additional details due to confidentiality concerns.
Incident Background
On the day of the incident, one lion climbed atop its container, but the situation remained under control thanks to the safety netting. This event occurred shortly after recent reports of Covid-19 infections in lions at Mandai’s facilities, although these animals are unrelated.
The escaped lions are reportedly recovering well, and preparations are underway for their continued journey to their intended destination.
