SINGAPORE: Joseph Schooling, Singapore’s Olympic gold medalist, clinched his first gold medal at the 31st Southeast Asia (SEA) Games on May 16, winning the 100m butterfly event. He finished first with a time of 52.22 seconds, narrowly beating compatriot Quah Zheng Wen, who clocked 52.86 seconds.

This victory marks Schooling’s 28th gold at the SEA Games and his fifth consecutive win in the 100m butterfly event, a streak that dates back to the 2013 SEA Games. Schooling’s impressive performance maintains his dominance in the competition, having previously defended his title in 2019 with a time of 51.84 seconds, just ahead of Quah’s 51.87 seconds.

The race, which was shared live by Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, further solidified Schooling’s place as the undisputed champion of the 100m butterfly in Southeast Asia.

In the heats, Schooling and Quah placed second and fourth, respectively, behind Thailand’s Navaphat Wongcharoen, the 2019 SEA Games silver medalist.
