Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link Set for Late 2026 Completion

Key Milestone for Cross-Border Connectivity Between Malaysia and Singapore

The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is on schedule to begin operations by the end of 2026, promising smoother travel between the two nations.

Progress Confirmed by Officials
Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir reaffirmed the project’s timeline during a recent meeting. Both highlighted the “excellent ties” between the two countries and discussed expanding bilateral collaborations in digital and green economies.

A Major Cross-Border Infrastructure Project
The RTS Link, a 4-km rail connection from Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore, is expected to transport up to 10,000 passengers per hour. This development is set to alleviate traffic congestion on the Causeway significantly.

Initially scheduled for 2024, the RTS project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has regained momentum, with passenger services anticipated by late 2026.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Balakrishnan’s official visit to Malaysia from January 15 to 18, 2023, included meetings with prominent Malaysian leaders, such as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Transport Minister Anthony Loke. These discussions reinforced the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation under Malaysia’s new government.

The RTS Link is expected to not only boost connectivity but also strengthen economic ties and foster mutual growth for Singapore and Malaysia.
