HSBC Singapore Appoints First Independent Board Chairwoman

Penny Goh Takes the Helm as Chair of HSBC Singapore’s Board

SINGAPORE – On February 16, HSBC Singapore announced the appointment of Penny Goh as its first independent board chairwoman, effective immediately. Goh takes over from Mervyn Fong, who had served as interim chair since August 2021. Fong will remain involved in the bank’s governance as chair of the risk committee and a member of the audit committee until his retirement in April 2022.

Goh, who joined HSBC Singapore as an independent non-executive director in August 2019, brings extensive leadership experience to the role. She previously co-chaired Allen & Gledhill and led the law firm’s corporate real estate practice. Goh also holds several key positions, including chair of Keppel Reit’s manager and director roles at Keppel Corporation, Keppel Land, and the Singapore Totalisator Board.

HSBC Singapore’s Chief Executive, Kee Joo Wong, expressed confidence in Goh’s appointment, noting her deep understanding of the local market. “Her strategic guidance will further propel our ambition to be the leading international bank for wealth management,” he said. HSBC Singapore is focused on doubling its wealth management business’s total wealth balances over the next five years.
