HDB to Focus on Housing Needs of Singles in Survey of 8,600 Households

Insights from Survey to Guide Future Housing Policies for Single Occupiers

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) of Singapore is launching its Sample Household Survey 2023/2024, aiming to better understand the housing needs of single non-homeowners living in public flats. The survey will involve 8,600 households, including single occupiers aged 21 to 54 years, and will run from October 2023 to April 2024.

This survey, which has been conducted every five years since 1968, focuses on three primary areas: HDB population demographics, residents’ social well-being, and the physical living environment. In addition to gathering insights on housing preferences, the survey will also gather feedback on community facilities within HDB estates. The goal is to assess how physical and social infrastructure can support community resilience.

Minister for National Development Desmond Lee emphasized the importance of participation in the survey, as it will help shape future policies and developments that align with residents’ evolving housing aspirations. The survey also provides a platform for residents to express their views on their life outlook, marriage, and long-term housing needs.

Results from the survey, which will include both face-to-face and online participation, are expected to be ready in 2025. The findings will play a crucial role in ensuring that HDB flats continue to meet the needs of a diverse population.
