Collaboration with Singtel Aims to Combat Scams by Verifying Sender IDs
Google has launched Rich Communication Services (RCS) business messaging in Singapore, offering a more secure alternative to SMS. The service, announced at Google’s Safer With Google event on August 15, 2024, is in collaboration with Singtel and supported by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). RCS business messaging is now available for RCS-enabled Android users on Singtel, and users of other telcos, such as M1, StarHub, and Simba, can also receive such messages.
The new system aims to address growing concerns about SMS-related scams by verifying the identity of businesses sending messages. Google, along with Singtel, will ensure the sender’s legal identity and sender ID are checked against Singapore’s SMS Sender ID Registry, which will help confirm that messages originate from legitimate businesses. This collaboration aims to provide a safer messaging experience for consumers, reducing the risk of fraudulent communications.
