Resorts World Cruises Takes Over Operations After Genting Hong Kong’s Liquidation
SINGAPORE: The Genting Dream cruise ship will begin operations under a new brand, Resorts World Cruises, starting from June 15, 2022. Previously operated by Dream Cruises, a subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong, the ship is now part of a new venture formed after Genting Hong Kong’s liquidation earlier this year.
The liquidation process followed a significant financial setback for Genting Hong Kong, which lost US$1.7 billion (S$2.4 billion) in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 and the resulting travel restrictions. As a result, the company’s three ships, including Genting Dream, Explorer Dream, and World Dream, ceased operations. Resorts World Cruises was established by Malaysian tycoon Lim Kok Thay shortly after the liquidation filing.
Although Resorts World Cruises currently operates Genting Dream, plans are in place to acquire the other two ships, with ongoing discussions with banks and stakeholders.
For passengers whose World Dream cruises were cancelled between March 2 and August 21, 2022, Resorts World Cruises is offering complimentary cruise credits. These credits will match the original value paid by passengers and can be used for cruises between June 15, 2022, and March 31, 2023. The credits are available only to those who did not receive a refund for their cancelled bookings.
