Expanding Mental Health Support for Fathers and Husbands

NUH to offer mental health screenings for men in caregiving roles

NUH Introduces Mental Health Screenings for Husbands and Fathers
The National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore is broadening its mental health support initiatives to include husbands and fathers of those under its care. This expanded programme provides early intervention, case management, and multidisciplinary treatment, with referrals available through community partners like Family Nexus and KidSTART.

Second Minister for Health Masagos Zulkifli emphasised the critical role fathers play in early childhood development, citing studies like SG LEADS, which highlight their influence on a child’s self-regulation and ability to delay gratification—skills linked to academic and life success.

MOH’s Commitment to Mental Health Prioritisation
During the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Committee of Supply debate, Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary reiterated the ministry’s focus on improving mental health services. The Interagency Taskforce on Mental Health and Well-being, formed in 2021, has engaged with over 950 respondents to refine recommendations for a national mental health strategy, which is set for release by the end of 2023.

A Tiered Model of Mental Health Care
The taskforce has proposed a tiered care model designed to match the level of support to the severity of mental health needs. This framework will help individuals identify suitable services and guide providers in service delivery, referrals, and care coordination.

To ensure its success, a national mental health competency training framework is being developed to standardise training for mental health professionals and para-professionals. This will also include resources for peer supporters and community volunteers to enhance mental health capabilities across different care settings.

Normalising Mental Health Conversations
Public education campaigns, such as “It’s OKAY to Reach Out” by the Health Promotion Board and “Beyond The Label” by the National Council of Social Service, aim to destigmatise mental health issues and encourage individuals to seek help. The taskforce plans to build on these efforts, fostering community conversations and driving ground-up mental health initiatives.

Senior Minister Janil Puthucheary highlighted the potential establishment of a central coordination office to streamline national efforts, ensuring that mental health and well-being remain a core focus for Singapore.
