Singapore’s First Wellness Centre for Stroke Survivors and Caregivers
In Singapore, the Stroke Support Station (S3) stands as the first dedicated wellness centre focused on aiding stroke survivors and their caregivers in both psychosocial and emotional recovery. Ms Liew Huay Ling, inspired by her father’s recovery, now leads K-pop and stretching classes at S3. Her father, who suffered from speech, eating difficulties, and immobility post-stroke, found new life and joy through S3’s activities like gardening and art, which significantly improved his condition and social engagement.
Rehabilitation Beyond Physical Therapy
S3 emphasizes the importance of community reintegration for stroke survivors, offering programs that encourage mental and emotional well-being. Ms Alexis Lau, head of rehab and wellness at S3, stresses that with determination, stroke survivors can lead active, meaningful lives. The centre opened a second location at Jurong Point in 2019 to widen its reach.
S3’s social worker, Ho Huei Fang, points out the psychological challenge of accepting a “new normal,” while executive director Ben Yeo notes the increasing need for awareness about stroke rehabilitation, especially among younger demographics affected by stroke.
The Role of Caregivers
Caregiving for a stroke survivor is demanding; it often involves round-the-clock care, leading to caregiver burnout. Madam Soon Chii Sy faced such challenges after her husband’s stroke, but found relief and progress through the Walk@S3 program. She now focuses on providing emotional support, advocating for self-care among caregivers. S3 supports caregivers through information, counseling, financial aid, and community support groups.
Collaborative Efforts for Better Support
Recognizing the vital role of caregivers, S3 collaborates with entities like the Tanoto Foundation to develop programs that empower family caregivers. This partnership aims to enhance the rehabilitation process while fostering family harmony and support. Belinda Tanoto from the foundation underscores the importance of a holistic approach to health, emphasizing support for caregivers to ensure they can also thrive.
S3’s comprehensive approach illustrates that stroke recovery is a journey shared by survivors and caregivers, promoting resilience, community involvement, and an active lifestyle to manage the complexities of post-stroke life.
