DPM Lawrence Wong Assures Inclusive Growth as Singapore Welcomes Talent and Investments

Government Committed to Ensuring Benefits are Shared Across Society

As Singapore continues to open its doors to more foreign talent and investments, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has reiterated the Government’s commitment to ensuring that growth remains inclusive for all citizens. In a statement on August 31, following the Ministry of Manpower’s announcement of a new work pass allowing high-earners and achievers to live in Singapore without first securing a job, Mr Wong emphasised that the benefits of Singapore’s status as a global city must be felt across all segments of society.

Mr Wong, who also serves as Finance Minister, acknowledged that while being open is crucial for Singapore’s survival, it is equally important that the country ensures foreign talent complements the local workforce. This includes regulating the flow of foreigners and enhancing their integration into Singapore’s workplace, culture, and values.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the valuable contributions of migrant workers, particularly during the pandemic, urging Singaporeans to show gratitude and embrace these workers for their sacrifices. He stressed the need for a united Singapore, where efforts are made to bridge any fault lines related to race, religion, or identity, to avoid societal division.

On the global stage, Mr Wong expressed concern over external influences in the changing geopolitical landscape, stressing the importance of safeguarding Singapore’s sovereignty and the Government’s ability to act in the best interests of its people, free from foreign interference.
