Partnerships aim to provide more opportunities for internships and staff placements in the semiconductor sector
Semiconductor companies in Singapore are continuing to recruit despite mixed opinions about the industry’s future performance, as highlighted by Ang Wee Seng, Executive Director of the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA). Speaking at the Electronics Industry Day on January 24, 2024, Ang addressed the mixed outlook for the semiconductor sector, noting that while some expect a slowdown, many foresee stronger growth in the second half of 2024.
During the event, four memoranda of understanding (MOUs) were signed between semiconductor companies and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to provide students with more opportunities to work with the sector. Companies including GlobalFoundries, Micron Technology, and STMicroelectronics, along with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s Institute of Microelectronics, signed agreements to offer internships, work attachments for ITE staff, and joint projects. This collaboration aims to benefit approximately 500 students over the next three years.
As part of these MOUs, GlobalFoundries, Micron, and STMicroelectronics will continue to support ITE’s work-study diploma in microelectronics, which was introduced in 2019. Additionally, ITE has partnered with these companies to develop virtual reality training packages and simulations to enhance student learning in semiconductor equipment maintenance and manufacturing processes.
This initiative reflects the sector’s commitment to developing the next generation of talent, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and data.
