Beloved ‘Sesame Street’ Star Bob McGrath Passes Away at 90

A Heartwarming Legacy Spanning Over Five Decades

Bob McGrath, cherished by generations as one of the original human faces on Sesame Street, has passed away at 90. Known for portraying the affable Bob Johnson, he was a key figure in the children’s series for over half a century.

His family confirmed the sad news via Facebook on Sunday, 4 December 2022: “The McGrath family has some heartbreaking news to share. Our beloved father, Bob McGrath, passed away peacefully at home today, surrounded by loved ones.”

As an actor, musician, and author of children’s literature, McGrath became a cornerstone of the Sesame Street family, debuting with the show in its pilot episode in 1969. He graced television screens for 47 seasons, making his final appearance in 2017. Even after leaving the show, he remained active at events celebrating Sesame Street’s legacy.

Controversial Departure Sparked Outrage
In 2016, fans reacted with dismay when McGrath, along with longtime cast members Emilio Delgado (Luis) and Roscoe Orman (Gordon), was let go after HBO acquired the show’s broadcasting rights. The decision not to renew their contracts left many viewers deeply upset.

McGrath’s legacy includes memorable moments like his performance of the beloved song People in Your Neighborhood. Beyond television, he pursued a music career, with notable success in Japan, and was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan and Manhattan School of Music.

Bob McGrath is survived by his wife, Ann, aged 89, their five children, and eight grandchildren.
