Bell, Book, Pen and More: 8 Symbols Presidential Hopefuls Can Use in Election

Candidates to Choose from a List of Approved Symbols for Singapore’s Presidential Election

Presidential candidates in Singapore’s 2023 election will select from eight approved symbols to represent their campaign. These symbols, which will appear next to candidates’ names on the ballot paper, can also be used during the election campaign, provided there is more than one candidate running.

The list of approved symbols includes a book, bell, flower, pen, dove, flashlight, tree, and magnifying glass. Candidates must choose their symbol by 12:30 pm on Nomination Day, August 22. Additionally, candidates have the option to submit a unique symbol for approval by the Returning Officer, provided it adheres to specific guidelines, such as being 400 by 400 pixels and not containing any racial, religious, or political affiliations.

This announcement comes as part of the preparation for the nation’s ninth presidential election, with Polling Day set for September 1. If multiple candidates are nominated, this day will also be declared a public holiday.

Tan Kin Lian, one of the four candidates in the race, has already revealed a symbol depicting four people reaching upwards, representing the major ethnic groups in Singapore living in harmony. During the 2011 presidential election, various candidates also used symbols such as spectacles, a palm tree, and a heart, which were linked to their personal or political identities.
