New facility aims to enhance Singapore’s role in advanced semiconductor manufacturing
The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) and semiconductor leader Applied Materials have launched a joint lab to advance semiconductor equipment technology and strengthen Singapore’s chip ecosystem.
The Applied Materials-A*Star Joint Lab for Applied Process Equipment Accelerator (Apex) will focus on developing sustainable manufacturing processes, reducing material waste, and improving equipment efficiency. It will also create computer models for testing and optimization, targeting applications in the Internet of Things, automotive, power, and sensor industries.
Beyond innovation, Apex will support Singapore’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing expertise to enhance their manufacturing capabilities and global competitiveness.
Launched at the Manufacturing Innovation & Technology Conference 2024, the initiative aligns with Applied Materials’ “Singapore 2030” strategy, which aims to expand R&D partnerships and develop local talent.
Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan highlighted the lab’s potential to strengthen Singapore’s semiconductor supply chain and reinforce its position as a key global hub, where one in five semiconductor equipment units is assembled.
