Hartley Humphrey Muze, a National Serviceman, is set to make history as he participates in Singapore’s National Day Parade.
As Singapore celebrates its 57th year of independence on August 9, one of the 2,000 participants in the National Day Parade (NDP) will be Hartley Humphrey Muze, a 25-year-old naval diver. Hartley is part of the 37 marching contingents, both virtual and physical, taking part in this year’s ceremony, which marks a special milestone—the 55th anniversary of National Service (NS55).
This year’s parade will pay tribute to all past and current national servicemen for their dedication and sacrifices. Hartley, a National Serviceman (NSF) with the rank of 3SG, will be featured in the “Tribute to NS55” video, making this his first time marching in the parade. His participation holds particular significance as he is the first African-Singaporean frogman and the first in his family to serve in National Service.
“Singapore is home to me, and it means everything because this is where I grew up and created memories,” said Muze. His commitment to National Service is deeply personal, and he believes in the importance of NS in keeping Singapore safe and independent. “NS has helped me build resilience. Being in the Navy has allowed me to play my part as a diver in defending Singapore’s waters. While my role may be small, I take pride in knowing I am prepared to defend my country, should the need arise,” he shared.
Hartley will complete his National Service in July 2023, and he is excited about the opportunity to participate in the NDP. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said. “Having my family attend the parade means a lot to me, and I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”
