Discover the 80-Year Legacy of Parkway East Hospital
A Surprising Discovery in the East
Having lived in the East Coast area during my teenage years, I was amazed to learn from a colleague about a hospital tucked away in Joo Chiat. This hospital isn’t just any facility—it holds a special place in her family’s history. Her mother gave birth to her there, and she recently welcomed her own baby girl at the very same hospital. Few places can boast such trust and continuity across generations.
The hospital in question is none other than Parkway East Hospital.
80 Years of Trusted Care
If you’re hearing about it for the first time, you’re not alone. Parkway East Hospital has a rich history spanning over eight decades. It began as the Paglar Clinic and Maternity Hospital in 1942, founded by Charles Joseph Pemberton Paglar, a Eurasian surgeon.
In the 1970s, it gained recognition for women’s healthcare before expanding its specialties in the 1980s under the name American Hospital of Singapore. The management changed hands in 1995 when Parkway Holdings Limited rebranded it as East Shore Hospital.
Between 2009 and 2010, it transitioned into a boutique hospital with upgraded facilities, enhanced services, and a broader range of specialists. Finally, in 2010, it adopted its current name, Parkway East Hospital. The legacy of this institution is proudly showcased in its lobby—a testament to its enduring commitment to care.
A Unique Blend of Comfort and Service
Situated in a serene neighbourhood, Parkway East Hospital exudes a welcoming charm. Its marble interiors and fragrant air evoke the feel of a boutique hotel. However, it’s not just the environment that stands out; the staff’s dedication leaves a lasting impression.
Senior Operations Manager Cheryl Tang, with over 30 years at the hospital, knows many patients by name and recalls moments of heartfelt appreciation, such as receiving a bouquet from a grateful client. Tang has also fostered trust among patients, including a couple who returned for medical care after a previous positive experience.
Nurse Emeline Lim shared how mothers often remember her from their first pregnancies and even request her presence during subsequent labours. When her schedule doesn’t allow, she still visits these mothers during her free time—a testament to the deep bonds formed at this hospital.
A Workplace That Feels Like Home
For its staff, Parkway East Hospital is more than just a workplace—it’s a second home. Many employees have spent decades there, building close relationships with colleagues across departments. Tang, who started as a clerk in 1983, rose through the ranks to become a senior operations manager, crediting the hospital’s supportive environment for her growth.
Radiographer Joseph Teo echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how teamwork enables the hospital to offer personalised care, something often missing in larger institutions.
Patients also hold this hospital in high regard. One satisfied grandparent chose Parkway East Hospital for the delivery of both grandchildren, confident in the expertise of its medical specialists. The hospital has even served prominent figures, such as singers Derrick Hoh and Tay Kewei, who welcomed their newborns there.
A Trusted Name in the East
Parkway East Hospital remains a reliable option for those seeking quality healthcare in the eastern region. Its blend of experienced staff, rich history, and dedication to personalised care makes it a standout choice for families. Whether it’s welcoming a new life or managing health concerns, this hospital is a place of comfort and trust.
