Pope Francis Continues Vatican Work from Hospital Despite Illness

The pontiff meets with Vatican officials at Gemelli Hospital while battling double pneumonia

Pope Francis, who remains critically ill with double pneumonia, is continuing to meet with Vatican officials from his hospital bed as he undergoes treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff is currently on his 12th day of hospitalisation, marking the longest such stay of his papacy.

Despite his condition, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis is alert, eating normally, and moving around his room. On Monday, he met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and his deputy to discuss ongoing Vatican matters, including cases for sainthood and recent appointments requiring papal approval.

The pope’s condition has shown slight improvement, though he remains in a critical state. The Vatican described his pneumonia as “complex,” caused by multiple microorganisms, and noted that the mild kidney insufficiency identified earlier was not a concern.

Over the past two years, Pope Francis has faced recurrent health issues, including respiratory infections. His past battle with pleurisy, which led to part of his lung being removed, makes him particularly susceptible to lung infections.

Despite his illness, the pope has continued his work, meeting daily with officials and participating in masses outdoors, even in cold weather. In early February, he had to cancel some public duties due to a severe cold but pressed on with his responsibilities.

Well-wishers have gathered in St Peter’s Square to pray for the pontiff’s recovery. His close friend, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, expressed hope that it is not yet the pope’s time.

A new medical update from the Vatican is expected later this evening.
